Renting an apartment in New Jersey: a newcomer's guide
Oct 20, 2026
Most landlords in New Jersey ask for proof of income, a credit check and a security deposit. By state law the deposit can't be more than 1.5 months' rent, and it must be kept in a bank account in your name.
No US credit history yet? Offer a larger first payment, a co-signer, or an employer letter. Always see the apartment in person and never wire money before you have signed a lease.
Popular areas for the Turkish community include Paterson, Clifton, Bergen County (Fort Lee, Cliffside Park, Fairview) and Hudson County.
