A Social Security Number (SSN) is the 9-digit number used for work, payroll and taxes in the US. It also makes opening a bank account, getting a credit card and renting much easier. Applying is free. Ignore anyone who offers to get you an SSN for a fee.

Who can get an SSN?

As a rule, people authorized to work in the US: green card holders, people with a work permit (EAD) and people on work visas. If you aren't authorized to work, you usually can't get an SSN, and you'd use an ITIN for taxes instead.

Documents you need

The Social Security Administration (SSA) asks you to prove three things. Documents must be originals or copies certified by the issuing agency; photocopies aren't accepted.

  • Identity: usually a valid passport.
  • Immigration status and work authorization: green card, EAD card, or your I-94 record and visa.
  • Age: passport or birth certificate.

Step by step

  1. Fill out Form SS-5: it's free on the SSA website.
  2. Book an appointment or visit an office: first-time applicants usually have to go to an SSA office in person. In some cases you can start online and finish at the office.
  3. Show your documents: the officer checks the originals and gives them back.
  4. Wait for the card: it arrives by mail. How long depends on the office and demand.

Sometimes you don't need a separate application

When you file certain immigration forms (such as a work permit or immigrant visa application), you can tick a box asking for an SSN. Your details then go to the SSA and the card can be mailed to you. Check whether you selected that option.

Keep your SSN safe

  • Don't carry the card in your wallet; store it somewhere safe.
  • Share the number only where it's really required: your employer, bank and taxes.
  • Calls saying "this is the SSA, your number has been suspended" are scams.

Looking for work?

Once your SSN arrives, your employer uses it to put you on payroll. Browse jobs on Amerikailanlar and read our guide to writing a US-style resume.
