A used car can be a great deal in the US if you follow the right steps. This checklist covers the mistakes buyers make most often, whether you buy from a private seller or a dealer.
1. Budget for the total cost
Add insurance, taxes, registration fees and first repairs to the price. Insurance can be expensive for new drivers, so get a quote before you buy.
2. Ask for the VIN
Every car has a 17-character VIN. If the seller won't share it, walk away. Use it to get a vehicle history report and check for accidents, flood damage, rolled-back mileage and salvage records.
3. Check the title
The title proves ownership. Check that:
- the name on the title matches the seller's ID;
- it doesn't say "salvage," "rebuilt" or "flood";
- there's no loan (lien) on the car. If there is, it must be paid off first.
4. Get an independent inspection
Have a mechanic you choose check the car before you buy. A few hundred dollars can save you thousands. A seller who refuses is a red flag.
5. Test-drive it
Drive in town and on the highway. Check the brakes, gear shifts, steering pull, dashboard warning lights and the A/C.
6. Know the market price
Compare with similar listings for the same model, year and mileage. A price far below market usually hides a problem.
7. Pay safely
- Meeting at a bank branch and paying there is the safest option.
- Never send a deposit for a car you haven't seen, and never pay with gift cards or crypto.
- A seller who is "overseas and will ship the car" is a scammer.
8. Get all the paperwork
The seller signs the back of the title over to you. Also get a bill of sale with the price and date. In New Jersey you have 10 days to transfer the title and register the car at the MVC, and you need proof of insurance to register.
9. Plates stay with the seller
In New Jersey, plates belong to the owner, not the car. The seller removes them and you get new plates when you register.
